From 24 November 2015 until 15 March 2016, visitors on the smartcity.brussels portal could vote for the next public space where the Urbizone free regional Wi-Fi network would be extended. Halles Saint-Géry, in the city centre, came in first place.
Website visitors were given the chance to choose from seven public spaces under consideration for the extension of
the Urbizone free regional Wi-Fi network in 2016. The ranking included several spots and places, which are very popular with Brussels residents and visitors to the city for entertainment and leisure. Here is the result of their vote:
- Halles Saint-Géry: 38%
- Place du Luxembourg: 18%
- Place Fernand Cocq: 16%
- Place Saint-Josse: 10%
- Place Simonis: 8%
- Parvis Sainte-Gudule: 6%
- Place Schweitzer: 4%.
New extensions of Urbizone on the cards
Urbizone will regularly be in the spotlight in 2016 due to the many extensions which are planned this year. The Brussels-Capital Region will naturally take the suggestions of the survey into account, but must also factor in technical delays, when it comes to the installation of new hotspots. Urbizone is already up and running in place Fernand Cocq, in Ixelles for example.
Urbizone will also be very busy in 2016 given that it is gradually extending its coverage to include the metro stations of the STIB network.
