“Mapping Smart Cities in the EU” is a report published by the European Parliament on the best smart cities among the EU cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
This benchmarking exercise was commissioned by the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy to provide advice and information to help shape the smart policies of cities in the European Union, in line with the Europe 2020 strategy. It defines a smart city as “a city seeking to address public issues via ICT-based solutions on the basis of multi-stakeholder, municipally based partnerships”.
The study took as its benchmark all European Union cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants to identify the six cities whose smart city strategy achieves the best results: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Manchester and Vienna.
More generally, the study identified 43% of European Union cities with between 100,000 and 200,000 inhabitants and almost 90% of European Union cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants as smart cities.
