Environment Brussels has developed various useful tools to help you consume local seasonal products.
Supermarkets offer us products from all over the world all year round. We easily forget what the real season is for beans, strawberries or tomatoes! A product imported by air or harvested in a heated greenhouse has a significantly bigger impact on the human environment than a product grown close to home, naturally, and in season.
Another issue is that we have become so accustomed to overconsumption that we often throw away food that is still eatable – on average about 15 kilograms every year!
Result? Our food accounts for one-third of our impact on the human environment.
Introducing a website and an app about seasonal products
Environment Brussels has developed various useful tools to help you consume local seasonal products.
At a glance the ‘Recipes for 4 seasons’ website and smartphone app will show you the vegetables and fruit of the month, explain whether they are available fresh or preserved, and give you suggestions for seasonal recipes.
Other things you can do on the website include selecting your favourite recipes and compiling your shopping list.
On AppStore and Google Play you can download a free
smartphone app (FR/NL), or alternatively use one of the QR codes.
