Brussels climbs in the smart cities ranking

02 September 2016

In 2015, Brussels improved its position in the world ranking of smart cities established by the Cities in Motion Index 2016. Particular feature: Our region distinguishes itself by its uniform development according to the various criteria used by this ranking.

Ranked in 37th position for the 2015 edition of the Cities in Motion Index (CIMI), the Brussels-Capital Region has climbed some 5 places in a year reaching 32nd place. At this level, it is close to acknowledged smart cities such as Barcelona or Stockholm whereas the top 3 in the ranking is occupied by New York, followed by London and Paris.

Brussels shares similarities with other top level smart cities. Like Amsterdam or Berlin, our capital has reached a particularly well-balanced level of development according to the 10 aspects studied by the CIMI: the economy, technology, human capital, social cohesion, international reputation, environment, mobility, urban planning, public management and governance.

Our Region is positioned above the median ranking for all aspects, in particular with regard to governance and technology. Brussels even arrives ahead of New York, the ranking leader, in terms of social cohesion, urban planning and the environment.

The CIMI ranking has been published annually since 2014 by the Center for globalization and strategy, within the Business School of the University of Navarra in Barcelona (IESE, Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa). The 2016 edition studied 181 cities, including 72 capitals, in over 80 countries.
