The result of fruitful cooperation between many public institutions, the geo.brussels portal includes the official geographical data of the Brussels institutions (Brussels Environment, Bruxelles Mobilité/Brussel Mobiliteit, Bruxelles Développement urbain/Brussel Stedelijke Ontwikkeling, Brussels institute for Statistics and Analysis, Brussels Regional Informatics Centre, STIB/MIVB, etc.).
A virtual library of geographical data
Its purpose is to facilitate access to baseline geographical information, i.e. information that is public, official and verified, concerning the Region’s entire territory. For this purpose, the data produced by Brussels’ various bodies have been streamlined to make them mutually compatible and combinable. To understand Brussels’ territory and its public policies, particularly in the areas of the environment, mobility and town planning, access to full, reliable and regularly updated information is indispensable.
The Brussels Region geoportal is, in fact, a virtual library of geographical data on the regional scale. It can meet simple location requirements (e.g. a building or parcel of land) as well as more specific requirements (e.g. speed cameras, Natural 2000 sites, waterway system, etc.).
Many different functions
On geo.brussels, you can:
- easily create and share maps on the basis of the available official data
- consult existing thematic maps
- identify available public data via the catalogue
- use the data in your own computer systems via the online services.
The Brussels Region geoportal was designed as part of the implementation of the INSPIRE European Directive (INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in the European community) and the Belgian Ordinance of 28 October 2010 on geographical information. In accordance with the provisions of the latter, it is managed by the GeoBru Committee, which in turn is chaired by the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (BISA).
