On 24 November, gender equality will be at the heart of the “Brussels Goes Gender-Smart” open-data hackathon organised by Brussels Smart City, the Brussels Regional Informatics Center (BRIC) and non-profit organisation Amazone. Its purpose is to develop gender-smart applications which encourage gender equality in the Brussels urban area. The hackathon is open to all.
A first in Belgium
For the first time in Belgium, open data and gender equality will be brought together in a hackathon. This new event organised by Brussels Smart City is intended to stimulate commitment to equality between men and women through the development of gender-smart applications based on open data.
With a view to developing gender-smart applications, the participants will have access to the open data on the
www.opendatastore.brussels portal. The following areas, which relate to gender equality, will be explored:
- Living together (respect, combating sexism, combating harassment in public, etc.);
- Urban services (public services, social services, communal services, etc.);
- Urban planning (smart urban equipment and furniture, safety and feelings of insecurity, urban diagnosis, etc.);
- Mapping (gamification, tourist itineraries, useful itineraries, urban diagnosis, etc.)
At the end of the day, each team will present its project to a jury of professionals. The prize? Participation in a MIC (Microsoft Innovation Center) bootcamp for each member of the winning team.
