Smart city: facts and figures for Brussels in 2014

09 September 2015

In 2014, the services, applications and platforms of the BRIC contributed towards developing the smart city in the Brussels-Capital Region. A look back at last year’s striking facts and figures.

Recently published on line, the 2014 annual report from the Brussels Region Informatics Centre provides a wealth of information on the penetration of ICT (information and communication technologies) in the administrations of Brussels, both local and regional.
These services, applications and platforms are contributing widely towards making the Region a smart city, for the benefit of its residents, its businesses and its public services. For instance:
  • the NOVA platform, for the processing of town planning and environmental permits, has registered 543.000 records to date. Since June 2014, the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region use the platform for town planning permits and 15 out of the 19 communes for environmental permits;
  • almost 3,000 users in about twenty institutions use the BOS 'council on line' platform for the electronic management of the secretariat at meetings or assemblies (government, municipal council, CPAS (public social assistance centres), police zones): 5,300 meetings have already benefited from this pooled solution;
  • as regards pooled cartographic tools, 2,500 hectares, 90,000 addresses, 4,500 traffic flow directions and more have been checked or updated in the Urbis digital cartography data while the geoportal geo.brussels, which is in line with the European INSPIRE directive, offers 77 sets of data available for use in the map creation interface;
  • since the launch of Fix My Street, just over 3,300 members of the general public have used the application to report a problem: almost 26,000 incidents have been reported and 60 % of them were resolved;
  • over 300 administrative formalities can already be carried out on IRISbox in just a few clicks: 27,000 documents have been ordered via this website desk, which has 72,000 users (including 20,000 newcomers in 2014).
