Enlarge the Brussels metro network

26 July 2019

If the inhabitants of Brussels had access to a rational metro network, this would decrease congestion, pollution and travel times.

Brussels deserves a metro worthy of its 1.2 million residents – 2 million by 2050. To date, Brussels has only 4 metro lines, actually only 2.5 if you discount the routes taken by several lines. Brussels deserves a metro that links the suburbs with the town centre faster than other means of transport. For instance, if the metro serviced the airport, Zaventem, Grand-Bigard, Dilbeek, Ruisbroek, Wemmel or Boondael, the residents of these places could use the metro rather than their cars. Also, popular places in Brussels would be connected to the city centre (Flagey, Boondael, Buyl, Stalle, Calevoet, Grand-Bigard, Basilix, De Wand, etc.). Metro lines would also make certain tram routes redundant, such as lines 3, 4, 32 or 55, for instance, leaving more room on the streets. The tram routes could be turned into cycle tracks. Building metro lines would require considerable investment, but would reduce traffic congestion in Brussels, reduce pollution and enable people to reach their destinations faster.
