Implement smart traffic lights for emergency vehicles

26 July 2019

Reduce noise pollution (sirens) in the city and improve the traffic flow of emergency vehicles by guaranteeing easy passing at intersections. When a priority vehicle approaches an intersection (to attend to an urgent situation), traffic lights should automatically change to make the use of sirens redundant.

Noise pollution is an important cause of stress and annoyance in the city, and can cause seriouis long-term health issues. Emergency vehicle sirens are one of the biggest culprits. According to protocol, emergency vehicles should use their siren when approaching an intersection, alerting other road users who can then ensure safe passage. However, should a police/fire vehicle or ambulance be able to communicate with traffic lights, it would be possible to stop all vehicles from entering an intersection by having the traffic light switch to red in all directions until the emergency vehicle has passed.
