City of Brussels: a platform to promote local commerce

30 October 2020

Covid-19 has caused many upheavals in the daily lives of citizens, not only from a health point of view, but also from a social and economic one. The City of Brussels, like several other Brussels municipalities, has decided to take matters into its own hands!

In order to support two of the most affected sectors, hospitality and convenience stores, the City launched a new web platform in April 2020. The site lists the shops and restaurants located in the city that offer an online ordering service, home deliveries or, for restaurants, takeaway meals. Bookshops, bakeries, restaurants of all kinds, fashion boutiques, organic shops and many more are featured. To favour proximity, the site also offers a list of food shops grouped by district. It's all you need to discover the City's top spots and find your nearest grocery store, butcher or fishmonger!

In addition to this directory, the site also spotlights twelve shopkeepers, one for each district of the City of Brussels. In short video testimonials, they explain their love for their job and their neighbourhood. We meet Sébastien Morvan, founder of the Brussels Beer Project, a business located in the Dansaert district: "A happening, epicurean, cosmopolitan district. It speaks every language, it suits us well," he explains.

While the initiative was launched in response to a crisis situation, the ambition is that it will continue to develop in the future. Indeed, promoting local commerce and proximity via Smart tools is fully in line with the ambitions of the Brussels Region.

The list of establishments is regularly updated thanks to an online form through which shops and restaurants can easily register on the platform.

Online ordering, collection or delivery: the choice is yours!
