How can we put an end to traffic congestion around schools? How can we improve the flow of information between citizens and municipal administrations? How can we valorise the tourist offering of the municipality? There is no shortage of challenges for administrations! During a three-day hackathon, citizens will be invited to roll up their sleeves and find digital solutions for them! Explanations.
Want to come up with a concrete solution to one of the problems mentioned above? That's the aim of the 'Hack your City' hackathon, organised in partnership with FuturoCité, UNamur, Digital Wallonia, Numéria, BeCode, Wallonie en Poche, and with the support of the Walloon Region.
Despite the corona crisis, this online hackathon, which will be held from 3 to 5 February 2021*, will be as multi-faceted as its traditional physical counterparts. To come up with successful ideas, the citizens' teams have four major elements at their disposal:
- around 20 stimulating challenges on offer, among other things, by the TEC, the cities of Liège, Hannut, Chimay, Mons and Braine;
- coaches from UNamur, SPW or the company Odoo;
- an interface called Gather.Town to simulate the conditions of a conventional event and facilitate the cooperation of teams with the administrations and coaches;
- open data from the Walloon administrations ...
The latter element merits further explanation, as the unique feature of this hackathon is the use of territorial data. In effect, the 'Hack Your City' hackathon is the 4th stage of the 'Ouvrir ma Ville' (Open my City) programme, whose aim is to support Walloon administrations in their first steps towards releasing data sets under an open licence (Open Data). During the event, the citizens' teams will be able to use this data with a specific objective in mind: creating a micro-service (e.g. a prototype app) for the benefit of Walloon administrations.
And if there's a competition, that means there's a jury! The projects will be evaluated by various experts, including Nicolas Installé, Executive Director of FuturoCité, Isabelle Rawart, Smart Territory Advisor at the Agence du Numérique, and Xavier Devroey, post-doctoral researcher at the University of Delft. In total, 4 prizes will be awarded to the creators of the various micro-services projects!
