App to fight food waste in Brussels
• 06 April 2016
According to the United Nations, up to a third of the world’s food is wasted each year. The idea is to connect leftover or unwanted food from Brussels supermarkets and streetmarkets to people who want it. An idea suggested by Ivo (Evere).
In a 2010 report, the European Commission estimated annual food waste generation in the EU 27 at approximately 179kg per capita, or 89m tonnes.
While supermarkets are implementing systems to reduce waste associated with their stores, technology provides an opportunity to empower customers to take an active role in improving the situation further. This challenge, would be in partnership with Brussels supermarkets, streetmarkets and restaurants.
Digital approach to reducing food waste in Brussels
We can create an app that send push notifications on behald of supermarkets and streetmarkets telling Brussels subscribers what's reduced as sell-by dates come up or you enter a product of choice in the search, and it shows where there is discounted food close to its sell-by date.
