The EAN (European Article Number) is a unique code that is associated with a gas or electricity supply point. You will need this code when if you move house, switch to a different supplier or request work to the meter.
Until recently, Sibelga’s Customer Service took around 4,000 calls each month from customers wanting to find out their EAN code. To make life easier, the energy networks operator developed a tool to help people swiftly look up this information on the operator’s website. All customers need to do is to simply enter their address and meter number.
As simple as this interface may seem, lengthy and meticulous ‘filtering’ is made to take place of the data. Hardly surprising considering there are some 1.2 million EAN codes in Brussels!
At the end of this long ‘filtering’ process, around 30% of EAN codes are left for which an extra verification round needs to be performed. In those cases, the application informs the customer Sibelga will get back to him.
