11 January 2017

The Economic and Social Council of the Brussels-Capital Region invites you to its forthcoming debate, to be held on Wednesday, 25 January 2017, from 12 noon to 2 pm :

Brussels, smart city: what support is needed to make proper use of new technologies?

Bianca Debaets, Secretary of State in the Brussels-Capital Region in charge in particular of regional and municipal informatics and digitalisation, will make a brief introductory speech.

Céline Vanderborght is Smart City Manager for the Brussels-Capital Region. Further to her experience as eGovernment Manager and having gained a diploma in Urban Planning and Sustainable Development in addition to her commercial engineering studies, she is increasing awareness of and promoting Smart City projects in Brussels, paying special attention to the topics of Open Data, data governance and citizen participation.

Stefan Verschuere has worked successively as a journalist, French teacher, adviser to a political group in the Senate, head of a minister’s office and political secretary in the House of Representatives. Since May 2007, he has been Vice-President of the Privacy Commission.

A ‘smart city’ is a very broad concept encompassing countless areas of urban management. In Brussels, digitalisation is one of the main axes of the Region’s ICT policy. The Brussels Region has been working on this concept for many years and aims to become a smart city.

During this debate, we will look at the theme of the smart city on the basis of various examples from Belgium and abroad. We will also answer questions relating to respect for privacy: how can gathering and using personal data and respect for privacy be reconciled? What is the legal status of the data gathered to make a smart city work? Who is the legal owner? etc.

PLACE:

A light lunch will be served for participants between 12 and 12.30 pm.
