Today, smart-city systems can be found everywhere in Brussels. To demonstrate this, non-profit organisation Korei organises a smart-city tour in the Maritime District – the former Port of Brussels – of the Brussels Region. An opportunity to find out about real-life innovations that affect the ways we communicate, reside, work and live in a smart city.
What does a smart city actually contribute to the lives of its population, enterprises and visitors? Non-profit organisation Korei answers that question with its walking tours of Brussels’ Maritime District. These tours arose as it was realised that smart-city technologies and achievements already look so familiar to us that we often do not realise their true scope.
What is a smart city?
With examples in Brussels at hand, the tour answers questions such as “What is a smart city?” or “What potential does that open up in the case of housing, and how does it help to develop a green and sustainable city?”. Projects such as wifi.brussels and Fix My Street, as well as applications relating to the smart economy and shared mobility, are showcased in the course of this themed guided tour, which lasts an hour and a half.
A wealth of digital initiatives
The Maritime District is particularly suited to this smart-city tour. Brussels’ former port is located on the Charleroi-Brussels canal; once an industrial working-class area, it is currently undergoing extensive redevelopment. The rehabilitation of the
Tour & Taxis site was the starting-point for this urban renewal, a new stage in which is being completed with the opening of the
Kanal museum of contemporary art. The area also hosts a wealth of digital-technology initiatives such as
DigitYser,
Cityfab 1 and
MolenGeek.
