This spring, the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region validated its Smart City memorandum of objectives for Brussels.
This memorandum of objectives is the result of long-term work that began in spring 2018 with bilateral meetings with the quadruple helix of Brussels Smart City stakeholders (civil society, academic world, public and private partners). The aim was to involve them in the project, win their support and identify and activate ideas and projects for the Brussels Smart City projects. In May, the BRIC met the political authorities so that we could work together on their vision, identify synergies and reflect together on the governance of the Smart City Office.
In the summer, the
BRIC was asked to deepen itswork and put forward a more in-depth inventory of existing solutions that could feed into the memorandum of objectives. The goal was to capitalise on these existing solutions and platforms and to put forward our integrated proposals to the available resources and structures. This inventory was prepared through 12 workshops with a selection of key players from public and private organisations in Brussels.
Following this intense participatory journey, we are proud to present this Smart City memorandum of objectives, which proposes a realistic and achievable vision for the coming years and in which the Smart City Office will play a leading role and monitor the achievement of this memorandum.
The BRIC was proud to see the broad-ranging projects in this memorandum contained, which it has been working on persistently for a number of years. These regional projects, based on the construction of the solid and sustainable infrastructure with our partner IRISnet, are the "Fiber to the School" initiatives, free WiFi and the Regional Data Center, the shared video security platforms and FIDUS for the exchange of data from authentic sources.
The next steps
- The development of the Smart City Office, which assumes the role of leader in accordance with the deployment of the Brussels Smart City policy. The Smart City Office (SCO) comes under the responsibility of the BRIC and is led by the Smart City Manager. A concrete proposal for implementation will be prepared by 30/04/2019.
- The definition of performance indicators and the creation of a Smart City roadmap that can be used to monitor the Smart City goals. An initial proposal for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will be prepared by 30/04.
