The Brussels start-up Skysun, specialised in financing photovoltaic panels, is joining forces with Abattoir SA/NV to install a solar park on the roof of the market hall of the Anderlecht slaughterhouse. With a roof area of 1.2 hectares, this project will be the largest installation of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) solar modules in an urban environment in Europe!
The market hall of the slaughterhouse will be given a new role! In the roof, Skysun will be integrating 5,800 photovoltaic modules, which will produce 1653MWh/year. This is equivalent to the energy consumption of 700 households.
To restore the protected market hall to its former glory, an integrated solution was devised in collaboration with the Sunsoak architectural office. The solution is pleasing to the eye, while also addressing the existing condensation problems.
Because respect for historical heritage goes hand in hand with innovative solutions for green and sustainable energy, Skysun was able to successfully defend its project before the Commission for Monuments and Sites.
In order to further commercialise the large volume of energy produced, Skysun is working with AYA Energy. What is special is that the green, local energy is sold directly to the final consumers.
Skysun has also offered individuals the opportunity to invest in this major Brussels project through crowdfunding.
