The Port of Brussels has recently installed four new photovoltaic benches in the outer harbour of Neder-Over-Hembeek. The Port is hoping that these benches will make renewable, local and free electricity available to the general public. It is now possible to enjoy a sandwich while using a green way to charge your smartphone!
The four benches installed by the Port of Brussels allow visitors to sit on them and charge their phone at the same time, thanks to the energy produced by the solar panels located on the roof of the bench, which also serves as rain protection. The benches are not connected to the electrical network, as the USB connections are powered only by the panels.
This pilot project was proposed as part of the development of the area between the BCT (Brussels Cruise Terminal) and the new skate park. "The location is particularly interesting due to the proximity of the benches to the skate park, the BCT and the bus stops," Florence Debrouwer, climate manager and project manager at the Port of Brussels, told Bruzz reporters.
The Port of Brussels has long been taking initiatives to make the port area sustainable and test all kinds of innovations. Examples include green rafts designed to protect aquatic fauna and cargo bikes for last mile deliveries.
"The benches improve the quality of public spaces and the environment," concludes Ms Debrouwer.
